Why Equity and Sustainability Matter for Human Development

In this lecture, I will :
1. reflect on the origins of and the concept of human development, the introduction of which in 1990 was a step change in how to measure development progress;
2. comment on why equity and environmental sustainability must be advanced together, and
3. draw attention to five particular areas of importance for accelerating sustainable human development now.

While the sentiments at the U.N. overwhelmingly recognized that measuring development purely in economic terms is not sustainable, it may be only when our resources are depleted that this issue will truly come to a head.

2012 April 25-26: Geneva, third workshop on water and adaptation to climate change in transboundary basins, making adaptation work

The workshop aims to exchange practical experience and share lessons learned on the technical and strategic aspects of adapting to climate change; identify best practices, challenges and success factors and lessons learnt; share experience between the pilot projects on adaptation to climate change in transboundary basins under the Water Convention as well as other similar initiatives; and support governments, organizations and joint bodies engaged in the process of preparing national or regional adaptation strategies.

A la fin du 3ème jour, chaque commité adoptera un rapport final, qui sera de plus voté par l' "Assemblée Générale Perspectives Jeunesse", composée de tous les participants, légitimant ainsi le document final.

Comme GIMUN bénéficie d'un statut spécial auprès des Nations Unies, ce document final circulera au sein des Nations Unies et des réeseaux d'ONGs; notre travail a donc un potentiel d'impact qui va au delà de la conférence.

27-29 april 2012: Youth Perspectives 2012

At the end of the third day, each committee will adopt a final report, which will be further voted upon by the “Youth Perspectives General Assembly”, composed of all participants, thus legitimizing the outcome document. Due to the fact that GIMUN benefits from Special Consultative Status within the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), this outcome document will be circulated within UN and NGO networks; our work has the potential for significant impact beyond our conference.

Protecting the environment by producing certified sustainable palm oil is also good for the bottom line, according to a groundbreaking new report released today.

Profitably and Sustainability in Palm Oil Production is a first-time study that comprehensively examines the financial costs and benefits of producing sustainable palm oil under the guidelines set out by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO).

The report finds that economic benefits outweigh the financial costs of pursuing sustainable palm oil operations.
