The Open Working Group (OWG) on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) has concluded its eight information-collection sessions during which they discussed a great number of topics in order to frame the successors of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG).
The co-chairs of the OWG have now released a ‘focus area document’ that sets out 19 broad issues for consideration where they feel that further action could help the international community realize transformative change for sustainable development. Based on this document, the co-chairs ask UN member states to begin identifying SDGs and accompanying targets at the ninth session of the OWG, taking place from 3-5 March. The document is prefaced by a letter that provides further detail on the process and emphasizes that the focus areas identified are not exhaustive, and that the document does not preclude inclusion of other issues discussed within the context of the OWG thematic clusters that may not have been captured.
