WTO Business Survey

Over 300 businesses around the world responded to a recent WTO survey that asked the business community to tell us their views on the WTO and its work.

95% believe the work of the WTO is vital for businesses.
97% believe that trade plays a role in generating growth and creating jobs.
72% think that the WTO has been successful in ensuring that governments comply with their commitments.
62% believe that the Doha Round can deliver benefits to businesses.

New Green Economy Partnership Responds to Rio+20 Call for Action

Four UN Agencies to Assist 30 Countries in Transition to a Green Economy

Nairobi, 19 February 2013 - A new partnership launched today by four UN agencies aims to support 30 countries over the next seven years in building national green economy strategies that will generate new jobs and skills, promote clean technologies, and reduce environmental risks and poverty.

The first universal session of the Governing Council/Global Ministerial Environment Forum of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is being held in Nairobi from 18 to 22 February 2013. The session was preceded by the fourteenth Global Major Groups and Stakeholders Forum (GMGSF-14), from 16 to 17 February, an informal consultation between regional groups, a high-level meeting on the rule of law and the environment and a Forum on Gender and the Environment, on 17 February.

What went wrong in the Global Climate Negotiations?

In the last 20 years, the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the world have, instead of declining, increased, by more than a third. In 1990, GHG emissions were 37 Gigatons (Gt) of CO2e[1]. In 2010, they surpassed 50 GtCO2e[2]. At this rate, if business-as-usual continues, global emissions can reach 58 GtCO2e by 2020, which would be a catastrophe for humanity and nature.
